2019 Rivers Edge Pinot Noir, Anderson Valley

Vineyard Profile

Coming off of a relatively dry winter, the 2019 vintage saw continued drought conditions across most of the North Coast growing region, including the typically wet Anderson Valley. Fortunately, bloom and fruit set were not interrupted by adverse conditions and yields were spot-on for a beautiful harvest. Located inland of the Pacific Ocean, Anderson Valley is cooled by coastal fog and precipitation; however, vineyards planted on the high ridges sit above the fog bank and experience drastic diurnal temperature shifts that are perfect for slow-ripening cool-climate sites like the River’s Edge Vineyard.

Winemaker’s Notes

Vibrant ruby violet in the glass, 2019 River’s Edge Pinot Noir beautifully balances the ripeness of the vintage with cool-climate brightness and acidity. Aromas of pomegranate, white strawberry and cranberry are layered with warm gingerbread, rose petal, sassafras and cedar. As the wine opens in the glass, more savory notes of bay leaf and black tea emerge as signatures of the coastal site.

The palate follows the nose, leading with juicy red fruits like cranberry, raspberry and currant. A more mineral-driven mid-palate brings it into balance with wet earth, dried herb and espresso notes. Tannins are soft and velvety, making this wine perfect to enjoy by itself with an aged cheese or with a complex, herb and spice driven dish. Though drinking beautifully upon release, this bottling has the potential to age for another 6-10 years, growing in complexity and texture with time in the cellar.
