2021 Pinot Noir, Rivers Edge
Appellation Profile
Mendocino, the source for this blend, is a coastal region blessed with cool breezes, diurnal temperature variations, and morning fog, making it an ideal place for Pinot Noir cultivation. However, the 2021 growing season was marked by several challenges, including significant drought conditions and multiple heatwaves that pushed temperatures over 100 degrees. Despite the drought, River’s Edge’s positioning helped it endure these harsh conditions, contributing to the ripeness and concentration of the grapes.
Winemaker’s Notes
The 2021 vintage showcases the resilience of the region and the grapes’ inherent quality in the face of adversity. This is a Pinot Noir of depth and nuance, with a vibrant ruby violet color mirroring its lively character.
On the nose, the wine opens up with the signature aromas of pomegranate, white strawberry, and cranberry, layered with hints of warm gingerbread and cedar. As it breathes, the coastal influence comes to the fore with notes of rose petals, sassafras, bay leaf, and black tea.
The palate is an expression of the vintage’s ripeness framed within the cool-climate brightness and acidity. There’s an enticing dance of cranberry, raspberry, and currant on the palate, matched by a mineral-driven mid-palate marked by wet earth, dried herbs, and espresso nuances. Despite the challenging season, the tannins have remained soft and velvety, offering a harmonious balance.
The vintage’s hardships have resulted in lower yields but concentrated flavors, making this wine an ideal companion to complex, herb and spice-driven dishes. While ready to enjoy now, the 2021 River’s Edge Pinot Noir also possesses the potential to age for another 6-10 years, evolving in complexity and texture with time in the cellar. The reduced yield and climatic challenges faced in 2021 have yielded a unique expression of Pinot Noir that will captivate wine enthusiasts seeking an intriguing and rewarding tasting experience.
